History of Hip: Minnesota Naughty?

Minnesota is home to such icons of wholesomeness as Princess Kay of the Milky Way and Prairie Home Companion, but our great state has a racy side too, as our presenters will note in their exploration of two of Minnesota’s finest risque exports. Sarah Murphy of Grapefruit Moon Gallery will explore the life, times and notable pin-up illustrations of Gil Elvgren (“the Norman Rockwell of Cheesecake”) and Susan Marks, author of “In the Mood for Munsingwear: Minnesota’s Claim to Underwear Fame,” will share some of the company’s more provocative campaigns.

History of Hip explores the mysterious factors that confer hipness on an artist or a fad, and trace the origins of creative genres that still register with artists, audiences, and tastemakers today. Snacks provided. For more information visit http://www.minnesotahistorycenter.org/hip.
